How Did We Get Here? A New Way to Think About Family Health
How Did We Get Here?
If you've ever laid awake at night asking yourself, "How did we get here?" I want you to know you're not alone.
It's one of the most common questions I hear from parents.
Some are talking about constipation. Others are worried about sleep, anxiety, behavior, picky eating, or a child who just doesn't seem like themselves anymore. The symptoms may be different, but underneath almost every conversation is the same question:
How did we get here?
For a long time, I asked my own version of that question.
Years before I became a mom or founded WellieWay, I was trying to understand my own health. I lived through years of chronic illness, medications, surgeries, fatigue, anxiety, and a healthcare system that always seemed to have another treatment for another symptom. But no one ever stepped back to ask the question I needed someone to ask:
Why was my body struggling in the first place?
That question changed my life.
It eventually became the foundation of Built, Not Fixed and the reason I created WellieWay.
Now, after working with hundreds of families, I've realized many parents are asking that same question. Only now, it's about their children.
Here's what I've come to believe.
Most children don't arrive "here" because of one birthday party, one antibiotic, one stressful week, or one parenting decision. Health is rarely built—or lost—in a single moment. It's shaped by thousands of ordinary moments that become the conditions our children grow up in.
That changed the way I look at health and overall wellness.
Instead of asking, "What do I need to fix?" I learned to ask, "What is my child's body responding to?"
That doesn't mean every outcome is within your control, and it certainly isn't about blaming parents. In fact, I hope this idea gives you the opposite feeling.
You didn't create the world you're raising your child in.
You're parenting in a time when families are busier than ever, chronic health challenges are becoming increasingly common, and advice is coming at you from every direction. You're doing the best you can inside a model you inherited.
But here's the good news.
You don't have to pass that same model on.
Every day, whether you realize it or not, you're building something. You're building family rhythms. You're building habits. You're building your child's relationship with food, movement, sleep, stress, and connection. Those ordinary choices may not feel significant today, but over time they become the conditions your child grows up in.
That's why WellieWay exists.
Not to help you become a perfect parent.
Not to overwhelm you with another list of things to do.
But to help you see your child's health through a different lens.
Because when your lens changes, your decisions begin to change. And over time, those decisions help create healthier conditions for your child to grow, adapt, and thrive.
Maybe that's the better question.
Not just...
"How did we get here?"
But...
"What do I want to start building from here?"
A Note Before You Go
If there's one thing I hope you take away from this note, it's this:
You don't have to rebuild your family's health overnight.
You don't have to be perfect.
You don't have to change everything this week.
Just become a little more intentional than you were yesterday.
Because every meal, every bedtime, every walk, every conversation, and every ordinary day is helping shape the world your child grows up in.
You're not building a perfect child.
You're not even building a healthy child.
You're building the conditions for one.
Keep building.
